Matthew Ball, best-selling author of “The Metaverse: And How It Will Revolutionize Everything,” released a lengthy post on his website titled “Why VR/AR Goes Farther Away as It Comes Into Focus.” He uses various instances from the history of XR to illustrate why the Metaverse appears so far away while the technology has already advanced so far. He said that VR has struggled to penetrate the mainstream market, with gaming consoles outselling VR gear at the counter. American author Matthew Ball argues that virtual reality (VR) headsets cannot provide the same computational power as game consoles. This means that, in comparison to game consoles, VR headsets must master a much more difficult task while overcoming greater technological limitations. VR games must be superior to alternatives such as TV, reading, board games, Dungeons & Dragons, and video games in order to drive adoption, yet the average VR user can only play with a subset of their peers. Ball is enthusiastic about the metaverse, noting that many of the AR apps are currently in use on smartphones.
