Eternity, a K-pop girl group, has gained millions of online views since their debut single in 2021. However, there is a significant difference that sets them apart from other pop groups – all 11 members are virtual characters. Created by deep learning tech company Pulse9, these hyper-real avatars use AI technology to interact with fans. Park Jieun, the CEO of Pulse9, sees virtual artists as a new genre that offers advantages over human performers, such as freedom from physical limitations and mental distress. The K-pop industry, known for its demanding nature and the challenges faced by artists, is exploring the potential of virtual idols to minimise risks and provide relief to overworked stars. While some express concerns about virtual avatars replacing human idols, many K-pop groups are embracing avatar technologies to reach global audiences and overcome language barriers. The market for digital humans and avatars is projected to grow significantly, indicating a promising future for these virtual performers.
