Start-up Synthesia, specializing in AI-driven avatars for personalized videos, has secured $90 million in a Series C funding round led by Accel, with strategic investment from Nvidia and participation from other investors. The company, which employs around 200 people, has developed AI technology that allows users to create instructional videos featuring stock or custom avatars. With over 50,000 customers and a year-over-year user growth rate of 456%, Synthesia aims to transform video production by reducing costs and delivering more personalised digital marketing and training experiences. The funding will be used to enhance avatar expressiveness and improve the platform’s speed and collaboration features. However, concerns regarding potential misuse for deepfakes and disinformation persist, and Synthesia emphasises its strict vetting process and safeguards against inappropriate content usage.
