Indonesia is witnessing the rise of digital avatars, or “metahumans,” which are being used for various purposes, from news delivery to guiding travellers. One example is Nadira, a virtual television anchor introduced by tvOne, a popular Indonesian broadcast channel. Based on the real-life news anchor Fahada Indi, Nadira mimics her appearance, voice, and movements. The channel uses artificial intelligence to translate Nadira’s vocals into different languages and dialects for diverse audiences across Indonesia’s ethnic groups. Similar avatars, including Sasya and Bhoomi, cater to different demographic groups. While these advancements are often hailed as AI-driven, they largely rely on AI support rather than full AI-generated capabilities. Experts suggest that human involvement is crucial for metahumans to effectively connect with audiences, as human creativity and inventiveness are yet to be matched by AI.
