Instacart is planning to automate its fulfilment centres to cut markups. The firm aims to supplant almost 500,000 gig workers with robots to build sustainable retailer relationships. Hundreds of fulfilment centres will be established around the U.S. where robots would assemble canned foods like soups and boxes of cereals while humans would deal with fresh produce and deli products. This long-term strategy is still in the preliminary stages.
