The Indian government has unveiled a scheme focused on fostering research and innovation in the pharmaceutical and medical technology (medtech) realms.

The initiative aims to curtail the nation’s reliance on imported goods, especially orphan drugs for rare diseases and medical devices. With an expected cost of Rs 5,000 crore, the scheme will involve the selection of nine drug and medical device manufacturers to engage in research across six priority sectors. The move seeks to enhance domestic production and self-sufficiency in the pharmaceutical and medtech sectors, aligning with India’s broader healthcare goals.
