In June, two bills, including the Recycling Infrastructure and Accessibility Act (H.R. 8183) and the Recycling and Composting Accountability Act (H.R. 8059), were introduced. The former will form a pilot rural recycling programme in the U.S. facilitated by the EPA that would provide competitive grants. The latter would improve data collection by requiring the EPA to collect and make publicly available data on recycling and composting rates across the country. America’s national recycling rate is less than 35%, so this move has been considered much needed by many. The Consumers Brand Association has called on House Energy & Commerce Committee members to pass both of the bills. It claims that the first bill will help underserved communities with recycling, and the second will fill “information gaps” related to the subject. The American Institute for Packaging and the Environment (Ameripen) has also sent a letter to the lawmakers to urge them to pass the bills.
