A study conducted by The George Institute for Global Health and UNSW Sydney shows that prescriptions of fresh fruits and vegetables by the doctor can help improve the health of patients with type 2 diabetes. Researchers observed that participants who abided by the “produce prescription” programme and consumed two extra servings of fruits and veggies every day for over 12 weeks saw a drop in LDL, otherwise known as bad cholesterol. This drop is very crucial as it is one of the major causes of heart disease. This study has a critical part to play as it strengthens the concept of “Food as Medicine” and can help doctors manage diet-related issues effectively.
