Big Y Foods, a New England grocer, initiated its e-commerce initiative, named myPicks Online Ordering, last year. It has transformed its online business since then. Customers order perishable items online and Big Y associates pack them after picking them up from Chicopee and Mass., its adjacent micro-fulfilment centres. Christian D’Amour, director of e-commerce at Big Y Foods, shared that the micro-fulfilment centres are reaping great benefits for the retailer. The centres measure 10,000 square feet and are able to process 4,000-5,000 orders weekly at full capacity. They are adjacent to a 60,000-square-foot supermarket outlet. The retailer has teamed up with Takeoff to roll out these ultra-efficient micro-fulfilment centres. Big Y chooses the best employees to pack fresh produce and meat to offer superior quality products to its shoppers.
